The 220 kV & 66 kV Transmission Development project in Bahrain began in 2012 and is ongoing. The project aims to enhance the transmission infrastructure in Bahrain and has already completed its initial phase from 2012-2016. This project is a significant step towards ensuring reliable and efficient power transmission in Bahrain. With ongoing efforts to enhance the transmission infrastructure, Bahrain is poised to become a regional leader regarding power transmission capabilities.
In March 2019, the Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) received proposals from contractors for 14 substations as part of the ongoing project. Later that year, an additional substation was added to the project. By 2024, bidders were shortlisted for the 66kV substation package, which includes the design, supply, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of fourteen 66/11kV substations on a lump sum turnkey basis. This demonstrates the commitment and progress towards the completion of the project, which will significantly enhance the power transmission infrastructure in Bahrain.
The bids for the 66kV substation package were highly competitive, with several companies vying for the contract. The bidders and their respective bid results are as follows:
