Doha Metro – $700 Million Contract for Red Line

The Doha Metro is a groundbreaking rail transit project in Qatar’s capital city, designed to be one of the most advanced systems globally. It is part of Qatar’s €130 billion diversification and modernization strategy, aiming to reduce dependency on natural gas exports and stimulate development in the Greater Doha area.

Doha Metro has two phases: one is operational, and the second is Blue Line expanding existing lines. It has four lines, i.e. Red, Green, Gold, & Blue. Its total length will be 300km when fully operational. The route of the Red Line, also known as the Coastal Line, will be from Al Wakra to Lusail via Hamad International Airport. The Green Line, or the Education Line, will be from Al Riffa to Al Mansoura. The Gold Line, or the Historic Line, will be from Ras Bu Aboud to Al Aziziya. The Blue Line, or the City Line, will be from West Bay to Airport City North.
The Consortium of Rolling Stock has been led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Corporation, Hitachi, Kinki Sharyo, and Thales. Seventy-five sets of three-car trains were delivered. An additional order for 35 trains for FIFA World Cup 2022. The project management and consultants for various lines or areas were:
Red Line: Jacobs Engineering.
Gold Line and Main Stations: Louis Berger and Egis Rail.
Green Line: Hill International.
Safety Assessment: Lloyd’s Register.
Project Management and Work Supervision (Phase One): SYSTRA-Parsons joint venture.
Lead Designer for Gold Line and Red South Underground Lines: Atkins.
Principal Architect for Qatar Integrated Railway Project: UNStudio.
