Status: Construction plans were announced in September 2007.

·       Consortium led by Vinci Construction, Hochtief Construction AG, CCC, and Qatari Diar Real Estate formed.

·       Memorandum of understanding signed with Vinci-led consortium.

·       Contract awarded to KBR for design, project, and construction management services in November 2008.

·       Discussions initiated in 2009 to adjust the bridge gradient for rail traffic.

·       French architects joined the consortium for design collaboration.

 

Year 2010-2013: Escalating Costs and Diplomatic Tensions

Status: Escalating costs and diplomatic tensions.

·       Dispute over the Hawar Islands reignited in May 2010.

·       Project placed on hold due to costs and diplomatic issues.

Year 2021: Diplomatic Resolution and Restart

·       Plans for the causeway recommenced in November 2023 during a meeting between Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa and Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani.
